For everx divine reality there is a demonic counterfeit. The supernatural gift of the Holy Spirit are no exception. For that reason, many christian are understandably cautious whenever they encounter such phenomena, because they fear that the source might be Satan rather than God. *

This is especially so today, when satanic counterfeits of spiritual gift are common and widely publicized. Unfortunately, some prophetic ministers operating in the Holy Spirit-given gift of prophecy, the word of knowledge, the word of wisdom, discerning of spirits, or even miracles are sometimes accused of practicing witchcraft, consorting with familiar spirits, or practicing so-called [NEW AGE] techniques. Actually, this is not a new accusation; Christians who spoke in tongues in the early Pentecostal Movement were often accused of demonic activity by their non-Pentecostal brothers and sisters in Christ who pointed out that some pagan religions practice speaking in tongues. *

Surface similarities. No doubt similarities appear on the surface between much that is done by the Spirit of God and much that the devil does as a counterfeit through people involved in cults, the occuult, witchcraft, Eastern religions, Satan worship and the New Age Movement. The devil's tricks are able to mimic tongues, prophecy, words of knowledge and wisdom, and even miracles, including apparent healings. And no wonder: Familiar spirit can convey information supernaturally, and Satan can call on his demons to perform feats such as levitation and psychic phenomenon. He can presumably even command an obedient spirit of infirmity to pause its harassment of an individual to make it appear that a supernatural healing has taken place. *

Nevertheless, these are only superficial similarities. The source of a supernatural phenomenon is what determines its legitimacy. ls it from the Spirit of God or Satan? From the Spirit of truth or from the spirit of error? *

REAL vs. COUNTERFEIT. As an illustration, consider a parallel example: the counterfeit rand bill. lf the counterfeiter has done his job well, you can hold a real bill right next to the fake one, and only someone trained to detect the difference will be able to do so. The two bills will look just alike, and the fake bill will even buy goods from those who are deceived by it. It is interesting to note that the government trains their people to detect the counterfeit currency, not by examining the false, but by constantly handling and working with actual government published rands. The best way to train God's people to discern the false is to constantly keep them exposed to and involved in the true supernatural ministry. *

So what is the difference between a real and counterfeit bill? lt is not in appearance; they look almost exactly alike. lt is not even in function; in most situations the counterfeit bill can function just as well as the real bill, buying goods for the person who knowingly or unknowingly uses it. No, the difference between a real bill and counterfeit bill is their source. The real money originates in the presses of the S.A. government, and thus carries a value, legitimacy and authority granted to it by that government. The counterfeit, however, originates in an illegitimate press with the purpose of circumventing the value and authority of the real. The real money is backed up by hard cash in the government treasury (or at least we hope so!); the other is backed up only by the deceit and greed of criminals. *

So it is counterfeit spiritual gifts. A New Age channeler may give an accurate word of knowledge; a palm reader or psychic may predict the future; a Hindu shaman may relieve someone's symptoms of physical affliction; a yoga practioner may levitate. But this does not mean that a Christian who prophesies, gives word of knowledge or wisdom, or works miracles is relying on demons. The existence of the counterfeited. The are no counterfeit three rand bills, because there are no real ones. *
